Daryl and Judy Muirhead, farmers and chief owner/operators of Muirhead Manufacturing Ltd.
have been in business since 1973. Muirhead Manufacturing has proven to be excellent diversification,
as the manufacturing shop, which employs 2-5 men, is operated during the winter months, allowing
proper time for all farming procedures.
The shop/metal fabrication plant is equipped with overhead cranes, brake, shear, iron workers,
saws, press, etc. Over the years, many things have been built in the shop. Some examples are:
grain trailers, combine carriers, truck decks, toolboxes, snowplows, grain bins and hoppers,
specialized lockers and worktables, and many more. Muirhead Manufacturing has earned a loyal
clientele over the years.
Another facet of diversification within the last few years is the addition of custom trucking. This
includes hauling canola to Velva, ND, and grains in Canada.
The Muirhead's farm over 5000 acres of land using a rotation of oilseeds, pulses and cereals.
Good farming practice is incorporated and all crops are direct seeded for low soil disturbance.
Daryl and Judy received the Farmer of the Year Award in 1997 and as well, this farm now holds an
Environmental Farm Plan Certificate. The utilization of good machinery as well as the latest technology
in precision farming, such as GPS and auto-steer on the 4720 John Deere sprayer, cuts costs and hours
in the long run. Daryl also utilizes technology through the use of a mobile PC and synchronized
computer programs to keep all crop applications and records organized and current.
Up to date information and timely marketing is so important and working with the good people at
Rayglen Commodities for many years has
benefited this farm's bottom line. Equally important has been good help. Daryl and Judy have a
full-time employee Randy Tylandsvik, with his many farm, mechanical and welding skills. As well,
a close neighbor Lovell Durr, who has been part of the welding team at Muirhead Mfg. since the
beginning. Part-time help during harvest is always welcome from Al Peterson.
Daryl and Judy's son, Luke Muirhead (Environmental Management Consultant) comes home when he can,
with girlfriend Skye, to lend a hand. While daughter Destiny Tolley, busy Social Worker, enjoys
a visit with husband Jay to view farm happenings during summer. Over the years Judy has been
busy with such things as: secretary for Muirhead Mfg./Farm, combine operator, grounds keeper of
the farm acreage, cook, mother, wife, etc.
Of course it is Daryl's many skills, entrepreneurial nature, enthusiasm, business realism and
real love for the land that keeps all aspects of the well-combined operation running smoothly.
His roots are, and have always been, strongly planted in agriculture, as the 100 Year Heritage
Farm Award, that was received last year, can attest to!.
